Working in your Mac apps

Saelyx doesn't just answer you: on the Mac it opens your apps, types into them while you watch and leaves the result in plain sight. Everything on this page is Mac only. On iPhone and iPad it doesn't exist: there, Saelyx leaves the text copied so you can paste it yourself.

Note

The Mac app and the web account are still partly in Spanish. This guide names settings in English; if you see the Spanish original, it's the same setting.

What it can do

Area What it does by voice Where you see the result
Excel, Word, PowerPoint Opens the file in its app, fills in cells, writes paragraphs, adds slides and saves In the app itself, as it types
Numbers, Pages, Keynote The same as above; in Keynote also speaker notes and presenting In the app itself
Export Excel and Word to PDF; Numbers to PDF, Excel or CSV; Pages to PDF, Word, EPUB, RTF or text; Keynote to PDF, PowerPoint, HTML, video or images A new file
Mail (Outlook or Mail) Counts unread, lists, reads, searches, drafts, replies, forwards, attaches, marks, moves and deletes In your mail client
Teams (desktop app) Opens the chat with a person, types the message, reads the open chat, joins and leaves meetings In Teams
Terminal Runs and reads commands, opens and names tabs Development → Terminal section
Code editor Opens a file and writes into it while you watch; nothing touches the disk until it saves Development → IDE section
Apps, windows and files Brings an app to the front, switches windows, lists folders, creates, moves and renames files In the Finder and your windows
Browser Looks at and drives Safari or Chrome to help with a web task In the browser
Typing anywhere Drafts a message and types it where the cursor is; then rereads the field and tells you what ended up written In the active field

The six Office and iWork apps are driven with the same two actions (open and edit). If what you ask can't be done in that app, Saelyx says so and suggests another route, such as the same sheet in Excel or a PDF.

How to ask

Talk naturally, as you would to a colleague who has your Mac in front of them. A few examples:

  • "Open the budget in Excel and add a row with the total."
  • "Do I have unread mail?" and then "Reply to the second one that I'll look at it tomorrow."
  • "Write a message in Teams to my colleague saying I'm running late."
  • "Run git status in my terminal and tell me what comes out."

To write an email or open a Teams chat, Saelyx needs the person's email address: a name isn't enough. If it doesn't have the address, it asks you instead of guessing.

What it confirms before acting

Saelyx asks for your yes when an action can't be undone or goes out to someone else:

  • sending an email or a Teams message;
  • deleting or moving to the Trash;
  • overwriting a file that already existed;
  • publishing or moving something in Odoo or Jira;
  • a terminal command that has an effect;
  • a click that looks like a payment or a deletion;
  • leaving a meeting or closing a tab with work in it.

It reads the action out loud, waits for your answer and, until you say yes, it isn't done. By voice, the confirmation expires after 2 minutes. Destructive terminal commands also ask for Touch ID. Creating or editing a document, a sheet or a new file isn't asked about every time.

Careful

Sending an email or a message can't be undone. Saelyx prepares it in view and waits for your yes before sending. If you say no, nothing is sent; in Teams it also clears what it had typed in the box.

You can adjust this in Settings → General → Security → Confirm Saelyx actions (on by default). In the terminal there are also three modes in Settings → Terminal: Always ask (the default), Planning (shows you the plan and waits for your OK) and Hands-free (reads and ordinary commands without asking; destructive ones still ask for Touch ID).

Permissions it needs

For macOS permission
Driving Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, Outlook and Mail Automation (macOS asks app by app)
Typing where your cursor is, switching windows, driving Teams Accessibility
Saving what it creates and attaching files to an email Documents folder

How to grant or withdraw them is in System permissions.

Limits

  • Mail. Saelyx doesn't see anyone's address until you ask for it on a specific message, doesn't pick the account (it works with the client you name), doesn't see which message you have selected and doesn't touch headers, rules, signatures or contacts.
  • Teams. It doesn't read chats without opening them, doesn't search your whole organisation, doesn't schedule meetings and doesn't record the call. Posting the minutes to a meeting chat is a different feature: see Microsoft 365.
  • iWork. Numbers has no bold or italic from here; Pages only writes into new or empty documents; Keynote doesn't support bold or alignment. None of the three supports charts, pivot tables or conditional formatting.
  • Files. It only touches the allowed folders (Documents, Desktop and Downloads by default, which you can extend from Remote), never keys or credentials, and whatever it deletes goes to the Trash: it never deletes for good.
  • Terminal. Very dangerous commands aren't run by voice.
  • Real click in the browser. It lives in Settings → Experimental, switches itself off when you reopen the app and always asks for confirmation.

These actions are part of the conversation with Saelyx, so they use units like anything else (see Account and plans).
