I tell the story of the mental notes in how Saelyx was born. Meeting Mode started on a Monday, 1 June, at 8:14 in the morning, though the idea was older: the first version of the Mac app, from 22 May, already captured the screen and, at 14:10 that day, the system audio.
It was a silent teleprompter. Saelyx listened to the meeting from my Mac, without joining the call, and said nothing aloud: it wrote a sentence or two on a floating panel, the lines rising like lyrics in a music player.
The first thing to fail was the simplest: asking the voice engine to answer with text only. It refused, and the connection dropped at once. I ended up asking for voice, never playing it, and showing the transcript of what it would have said. A teleprompter is a voice with the sound taken off.
01It hears you, but never answers
The real test came that same Monday, in a meeting of nine people. Saelyx heard everything and didn't answer once.
A voice engine decides your turn is over when it hears a pause, a silence shorter than a second. In a meeting somebody is always talking, so the pause never came and the turn never closed. I took that decision away from the engine and set the clock myself: the app closed the turn every eleven seconds and, if someone said “Saelyx”, it answered straight away.
The second failure showed up with that fix in place: it answered fine at first and, a few minutes in, went quiet even though it was still listening. With continuous audio, the conversation's memory filled up. A sliding window, which keeps dropping the oldest part, solved it. That Monday brought 28 changes, and the version went from 0.3.0 to 0.3.7.
02What's left when it ends
On 5 June the meeting summary arrived, with its decisions, tasks and open questions. If it fails, it says so instead of making a summary up. I use it a lot.
03Eyes, and a small chat
Seeing the screen was one of the oldest ideas, and it went worse than listening. When I shared my screen, the voice connection dropped after almost a minute, and only while images were going through. On 9 June I suspected the image format; I fixed it and, half an hour later, my own tests ruled it out.
What finally worked was to stop sending images: Saelyx reads the text on your screen, on your Mac, and only that text reaches the voice engine. Sending it didn't work first time either. With the microphone open, the engine took it for an interruption and Saelyx got stuck on a long “Eeeee”. That same day I changed how I hand it over: the text goes in as the answer to a tool call, and only when you ask about what you're looking at. More in what leaves your computer.
The mini chat is from 8 June, and it started as an annoyance. In the middle of a meeting I'd have to leave for Saelyx's chat to look something up, and the chat told me it couldn't hear the meeting from there. I wondered whether the Saelyx in the chat was the same one that was awake. It wasn't: two sessions, each with its own context, that never talked to each other. I made what you type in the mini chat go into the listening session, and the answer come out on the panel. One Saelyx, one pair of ears.
On 17 September I found the subtitles harsh: a black box that, on camera, was reflected in my glasses. I took the box away. Now they're plain white letters with no background, rising from the bottom like film subtitles; the trade-off is less contrast over bright video.
04Now, without voice
None of this came out at once: it was one meeting after another, from that Monday when Saelyx heard everything and answered nothing. I'm now working on a meeting without voice, in beta: Saelyx listens without keeping a voice conversation open, and you ask it by typing. I'm measuring it and promise nothing.
05Frequently asked questions
When did Meeting Mode come out?
On 1 June 2026, as a silent teleprompter: a floating panel where Saelyx writes a sentence or two while it listens to the meeting.
Can I ask something during a meeting without speaking?
Yes. On the Mac, Meeting Mode includes a mini chat: you type a short question and the answer appears in the same panel.
What does the summary of a meeting include?
A short summary, the decisions, the tasks with an owner and a date if they were stated, the open questions and the key moments. If it can't be generated, it says so instead of making one up.
